#WorkInPublishing Week - Hear From LDN Publishing Apprentices
For #WorkInPublishing week, we've been talking to our awesome Publishing Apprentices and asking them about their route into the publishing industry through an apprenticeship.
Working across publishers including Harper Collins, Springer Nature, Bloomsbury, Elsevier and Alain Charles Publishing, here’s what they’ve had to say about their journey so far!
Working within Springer Nature for over 12 months now as an office assistant has allowed me to gain experience and knowledge of various departments within publishing, from production to rights and invoicing to marketing and publicity.
Furthermore, with the COVID-19 global pandemic it has also highlighted the importance of the academic publishing industry and the vital role it plays in publishing research, which is informative to all not just with COVID-19 but other key issues such as climate change.
The publishing apprenticeship has helped me gain knowledge and skills from all areas of publishing and the publishing process which I have been able to apply within my job and assist with additional projects outside of my role, giving me direction to my next steps within the publishing industry.

Publishing Administration Apprentice
LDN Publishing Apprenticeship helped me get not just a foot in the door, but a whole leg.
It has provided me with a comprehensive view of the industry and hope the knowledge I have gained will keep that door ajar for future opportunities.

Publishing & Sales Apprentice
As part of the apprenticeship, I was allowed certain time out of my day-to-day job to do various other work, but still related to publishing. I took the wise decision to interview other employees and help other departments with their work.
By talking to people about what it is they do, it offered me a real insight into this whole new world. I started to understand just what publishing was all about. Offering my voluntary help to other departments has been the most advantageous commitment I have made over the last 12 months. I feel like I have really found my feet by doing so
Alongside professional work life, I am part of LDN Apprenticeships. This means I have monthly training workshops to attend, monthly coaching sessions to set goals and assess progress, essays to write, projects to produce, research to conduct and articles to read.
Guilty, I underestimated how much there would be to do. Some young adults complete apprenticeships with minimal coursework to show for it. LDN ensure the contrary, and I would not have it any other way.

Production Assistant Apprentice
Becoming an apprentice during lockdown was a lot smoother than I initially thought it would be. LDN Apprenticeships were able to offer a smooth transition, even with the interviews and work trials all being over Zoom.
I felt the virtual Kickstarter eased any doubts I had over time and it was just like an interview in person. The staff at LDN apprenticeships were so friendly and helpful and kept me informed about every single stage, even after I was hired as an apprentice!

Publishing Assistant Apprentice
My journey with LDN Apprenticeships started after a long while of searching for a career path that suited me- I'm proud to say I definitely found it with LDN!
Since my first application and career kickstarter, I've admired just how personable everyone at LDN is - it's great to see a recruitment agency that perfectly embody the values they expect from candidates! Everyone I've met is brimming with EEWAP and it's admirable that they all lead by example. This meant I was really inspired and totally understood what a great candidate looked like.
The constant feedback at every stage, including an unsuccessful career kickstarter and every part of my successful application, was really helpful. Celia and everyone at LDN are never afraid to expand and give you pointers. This stage can so often feel demoralising but I came out every time only more determined to make sure I came back even better!
